SSAT Board of Directors Welcomes New Members
Tyler C. Tingley, principal of Phillips Exeter Academy (NH) since 1997, has an extensive background in independent schools. He was graduated from Kingswood- Oxford School (CT), and later returned there as a teacher of English. He also served Kingswood-Oxford as Dean of Boys, Director of College Counseling, Treasurer of the school, Associate Headmaster and Headmaster in his almost two decades with the school. Prior to accepting his current position at Phillips Exeter Academy, Tyler was head of The Blake School (MN). During his six years at Blake, his energy and educational vision invigorated the entire school community. Under his leadership, Blake was recognized twice as a National School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. Tyler holds both masters and doctorate degrees from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education, and has written extensively and participated in independent school workshops on long-range planning and development. He is a former member of the board of directors of NAIS, and former president of both the Minnesota and Connecticut Associations of Independent Schools. He has served as vice chair of the Minnesota Independent School Fund and is a member of the Headmaster’s Association, the Country Day School Headmaster’s Association, and the national Cum Laude Society.

Barbara Flanagan, Dean of Admission at Western Reserve Academy, OH since 1987, joins the Board with a background of over 30 years in education. Barbara earned her B.S. at Towson State University (MD), an M.S. from the University of Michigan, and Master of Education degrees from both Kent State (OH) and Harvard. Barbara has served as Interim Executive Director of the Ohio Association of Independent Schools (2000-2001), and Director of the Academic Enrichment Center (1999-2000) at Western Reserve. Prior to her career in independent school admissions, she was a speech and language pathologist for the Hudson, OH public schools (1985-1989) as well as the Coordinator and Speech and Language Pathologist for the Simsbury, CT Preschool Diagnostic Program (1975-1981). She served in several other capacities as a language therapist from 1970-1982. Since 1986, Barbara has served on a number of committees at Western Reserve, including Minority Recruitment, Assembly Speakers, College Guidance, and Assessment and Outcome. She was also International Student Coordinator. Barbara is a widely accomplished public speaker and published writer. She has served as a panelist or speaker for such organizations as the Independent Educational Consultants Association, Ohio Association of Independent Schools, Independent School Association of Central States, Midwest Boarding Schools Conference, NAIS and Thailand Parliamentary Committee for the Thai Scholar Program.

Lawrence Sampleton, Director of Admission and Co-Director of Financial Aid at St. Stephens Episcopal School, TX since 1991, joins the SSATB Board with the distinction of being the first former professional athlete to do so. His distinguished football career includes playing on the 1982 Cotton Bowl Championship team out of the University of Texas, and subsequently for the Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins. When he played professional ball, Lawrence also engaged in promotion and publicity both for his teams and for the NFL. This included public speaking engagements for educational, social and volunteer associations on the topics of sports, motivation and drug awareness. Following his retirement from football, Lawrence served as head track, and girls’ basketball, coach at St. Stephen’s (1988-1989), and then as a teacher and head football coach at St. Michael’s Academy, TX (1989-1991). In his capacity as Director of International Community Relations for St. Stephens, he established an international alumni organization that includes recruiting, retention and fundraising. Lawrence is a member of the Trinity Episcopal School Advisory Council and Texas Exes Board of Directors for the University of Texas.

Linda Whitlock, President and Chief Executive Officer of Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston (BGCB), brings her passion for children to her leadership of her organization, whose high-impact programs enable over 8,000 children and teens from low-income neighborhoods in Greater Boston to become responsible citizens and leaders. Linda has also served in the administrations of Governors Dukakis and King in MA, and taught at MIT, Tufts University and the University of Michigan. Additionally, she was a history teacher and Assistant Head for Enrollment Management at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School (MA), and history teacher and Associate Director of Admission at Concord Academy (MA). Linda is an active participant on many corporate and non-profit boards, including the Boards of Concord Academy, Belmont Hill School, Meadowbrook School of Weston, Facing History and Ourselves, the Boston Children’s Chorus, and the Boston Plan for Excellence in the Public Schools, as well as an overseer of the WGBH Educational Foundation. Linda is the recipient of many honors, including the Heroes Among Us Award from the Boston Celtics, and the Leadership Award from ACCESS, a provider of college financial aid to Boston Public School Students. Linda is an alumna of Mount Holyoke College with a Master of Arts degree in psychology from the University of Michigan. She also holds an Honorary Doctor of Arts Degree from Pine Manor College. Linda was a Distinguished Fellow at Wheaton College for the 2001-2002 academic year, and she has been appointed a Bergstrom Fellow at Tufts University for the 2003-2004 academic year.
