The prestigious Hull Maynard Presidential Award was given
to Thomas Southworth, Director of Alumni and Parent
Relations, The Loomis Chaffee School (CT), during the
awards luncheon held on Friday, October 2. Hull Maynard
was the Director of Admission at
Loomis School in the 1950s; he
was one of the founding fathers
and fi rst Executive Secretary of
the fl edgling SSATB. Southworth
is only the fourth person to
receive the award in twelve
years.
Long an active and vocal
SSATB member and supporter,
Tom Southworth has served on
SSATB’s Board of Directors
since 1998.
An Ohio farm boy educated in the local public schools,
Tom had virtually no awareness of the world of private
education. But by his senior year at Kenyon College, he
knew he wanted to teach, and had become convinced that
the boarding school world was the place to be. In his fi rst
job at Moravian Academy, he taught middle school math,
coached at that level, and lived in a girl’s dorm on the upper
school campus. He remained in the middle school at several
different schools until he offered the chance to explore
admission at Williston Northampton in Easthampton, MA,
followed by nine years as Choate Rosemary Hall’s (CT)
Director of Financial Aid. Southworth then became the
Director of Admission at Loomis Chaffee, a position he
held for 24 years.
The presentation of the Hull Maynard Award to Thomas
Southworth is a testament to his dedication to the
admission profession and his tireless service to SSATB
and his colleagues. As the Chair of the Test Development
Committee, Tom was instrumental in shifting the SSAT to
a “power” test and developing the writing sample. He
continues to lead SSAT into new opportunities with his support of the
elementary and English language tests now in development.
